Getting to the Tulum Ruins
The Tulum Ruins sit on the coast about two hours south of Cancun, an hour south of Playa del Carmen and fifteen minutes from the middle of Tulum town. Since 2024 the entrance has been through Parque del Jaguar, which changed where you park and how far you walk.
From Cancun (about two hours each way)
Roughly 130 kilometres down Highway 307. A private car takes about two hours; a coach tour takes longer, because the pickup circuit around the hotel zone can add an hour and a half before you leave town. That is not a complaint about any operator — it is how shared transfers work, and reviewers of the Cancun departures mention it consistently.

From Playa del Carmen (about an hour)
About 65 kilometres, and the easiest base for a Tulum day. The ADO bus runs from the Playa del Carmen terminal to Tulum town frequently through the day. Colectivos — shared vans — leave from Calle 2 Norte and cost a fraction of a taxi, but they drop you in Tulum town rather than at the ruins.
From Tulum town (fifteen minutes, and you can cycle it)
Tulum Pueblo is about four kilometres from the entrance. A taxi takes ten to fifteen minutes. The ride is flat and there is a cycle path for most of it, which is why one of the departures compared here runs the whole thing by bicycle from town.
Parking, and the walk from the car park
Parking is at the Parque del Jaguar entrance, and it is charged separately from the entrance fees. From the car park to the archaeological zone gate is a walk of the better part of a kilometre. There is a shuttle along that stretch, also charged separately. In August, with no shade, that walk is the part of the day people remember for the wrong reasons.
The Parque del Jaguar entrance
Parque del Jaguar is the national park created in late 2024 that now contains the archaeological zone. In practice it means the ruins are no longer a single gate with a single ticket: you pass through the park, and the park, the conservation commission and INAH each take their own fee. Driving yourself, and whether to
Hiring a car is the only way to be at the gate for opening from Cancun, and on a first visit that is worth more than anything a tour adds. Highway 307 is a fast, straightforward dual carriageway most of the way. Watch for the speed humps through the towns, keep the paperwork with you, and expect to pay for parking on arrival.
Against that: you then deal with three ticket windows yourself, and you drive four hours in a day. Whether that trade is worth it is the honest question, and the planning guides work through it.
Arriving from a cruise call
Ships calling at Cozumel need the ferry to Playa del Carmen first, which makes Tulum a tight but achievable half day. Costa Maya is too far south for a comfortable return. If you are on a ship's clock, the short express departures are the only ones that reliably fit, and missing the boat is your risk rather than the operator's.
Which arrival gets you the best visit
