Pickup: confirmed the night before, and earlier than you expect. If you are at the far end of the hotel zone you are likely to be collected first and to spend longest aboard.

Who should choose something else
Anyone who wants the ruins at their best. A shared Cancun departure cannot get you there for opening. If an empty site and cool stone matter to you, either book a private Tulum Ruins tour or move down the coast for a night.
Anyone short on holiday days. Twelve hours is a whole day of a week's holiday spent largely in a van.
Families with young children. The pickup circuit plus four hours of driving is a great deal to ask. From Playa del Carmen the same day is three hours shorter.
